The clock is ticking for the characters competing in the “Harry Potter” World Cup and the fans who love them. What was once a field of 64 is already down to eight, and on Monday, July 11, the winner will be declared live during MTV News’ live stream from the red carpet of the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2″ New York City premiere.

MTV News’ Josh Horowitz will be manning the carpet, chatting with fan favorites Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Alan Rickman, Tom Felton, Matthew Lewis, Helen McCroy and director David Yates among others. Fans can submit their questions for the stars via MTV.com or Twitter (tweet @MTVNews using the hashtag #AskPotter) starting now and throughout the live stream, which kicks off at 4:30 p.m. ET on MTV.com.

Over 5 million votes have been cast so far, and there are still three more rounds of voting to go. The Elite Eight were announced on Wednesday morning (July 6): Harry Potter vs. Severus Snape, Hermione Granger vs. Remus Lupin, Ron Weasley vs. Rubeus Hagrid and Draco Malfoy vs. Sirius Black. Voting for this round will continue through Thursday at midnight, when the Final Four will be announced.

World Cup voting for the Final Four continues through midnight on Sunday, and then the final two favorite “Harry Potter” characters battle it out during the championship round until the winner is announced live. With five out of the Elite Eight actors attending the premiere, there’s a good chance we’ll be able to chat with the stars about how far their characters made it in the World Cup.

Matthew Lewis, James and Oliver Phelps and Fiona Shaw already rallied fans to vote for their characters, though Neville Longbottom, the Weasley twins and Aunt Petunia have unfortunately fallen from the World Cup ranks.

Now it’s up to the fans to decide who the ultimate “Harry Potter” character is in the “Harry Potter” World Cup. Voting continues over at MTV Movies Blog and you can also get the debate going on Twitter with the hashtag #mtvpottercup

Singer teases his new project by pointing to past hits like ‘Yeah!’ and ‘OMG.’

With the success of songs like “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” “Hot Tottie” and “OMG,” Usher had himself a fairly massive 2010. But rather than rest on his laurels, he’s looking to build on his big year, not with an album, but with a “movement.”

It’s something he’s calling “Rev Pop” — or, simply, “Rev” — and though he’s already teased his idea in a video with David Guetta (Akon is also involved), he has yet to speak in full about it. So when MTV News caught up with Ush before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles at the (Belvedere) RED launch party, we asked him about his next musical endeavor. And though he didn’t reveal much, he did let it be known that “Rev” isn’t exactly something new. In fact, he’s been doing it for a while now.

“I’ll give it to you this way: At a later date, I’ll tell you more about Rev Pop, but if I were to give you a flash: I’ve done it before, I did it with ‘Yeah!’ ” he said, “taking a cultural experience, and also worldwide recognition of a feeling, and putting the soul in the middle of it. Not allowing it to shift heavily to R&B genre, or pop. I did it again with ‘OMG,’ once again putting the soul in the middle of it, which was an electric-pop experience, with the soul.

“It’s bringing those elements together to tell a story, that was born here,” he said, gesturing toward his heart, “And that’s what Rev Pop is. There’s more, I mean, I could really elaborate, but that’s just what I’m going to tell you right now. ‘Rev’ is what it’s called … the movement is called Rev.”

Usher wouldn’t say just when his fans would be getting their first taste of Rev, but whenever they do, it sounds like they’re going to be impressed … if not a little shocked.

“Stay alive,” he smiled, “Because you’re definitely going to be in for a surprise.”

In looking at the cast of “Horrible Bosses,” it makes sense that funnymen like Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day and Jason Bateman would be attached to a film that revolves around three guys trying to kill their three very horrible bosses. Even supporting players Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are folks who don’t surprise us in taking on the raunchier territory that comes with an R rating.

One castmember’s name that did raise an eyebrow, however, is Jennifer Aniston, known throughout celeb-dom to be one of America’s favorite TV and cinema sweethearts. In “Horrible Bosses,” Aniston is anything but sweet. She plays Julia, a somewhat demented dentist who takes the definition of sexual harassment to whole new levels in her torture of employee Dale (played by Charlie Day).

When MTV News caught up with the unexpected scene-stealer recently, we asked her how she decided to take on the foul-mouthed, sexually explicit role.

“It wasn’t a ‘might.’ There was never the word ‘might’ [involved in deciding to take the part],” Aniston said. “It was pretty much, ‘How fast can I say yes? I will play this part.’

“I’d never seen anything like this woman, and I couldn’t imagine not doing it,” Aniston explained, adding that she was happy to be approached for a role that is so different from those she is normally offered.

“This stuff never comes my way,” she said.

Director Seth Gordon said he had Aniston in mind for the role from the get-go, largely because he knew of her comedic chops and wanted to see her play something unlike her iconic “Friends” character, Rachel Green.

“I imagined her in that role the first time I read the script, and I can’t explain why, but I just did,” he said. “Obviously, I knew she was a great comedian, and I feel like I’ve always seen that she can do more than she’s offered to do. A lot of stuff seems like a rehashing of Rachel in some way.”

When pressed to pick a favorite Aniston moment in the film, Gordon admitted that her first scene takes the cake because it’s the first time you hear her get really raunchy. Without getting too explicit, in the scene, Aniston describes pleasuring herself to “Gossip Girl” star Penn Badgley.

“Everyone’s jaws hit the floor,” he recalled. “You can imagine what it is like for her to say that, but when you first hear it, you are stunned. We just cackled. I definitely screwed up some takes when she was on set, because I would just burst out laughing and I couldn’t help it. She’s so funny.”

Experts think B needs a hit single soon, but her latest album seems poised to top the charts again next week.

As a contender for 2011 Summer Diva, Beyoncé is certainly making great strides to rule the airwaves this summer. After B’s fourth solo LP, 4, debuted at #1 last week, it’s looking likely that she’ll top the charts on next week’s Billboard albums chart as well.

A rep for SoundScan hadn’t responded to MTV News’ request for an exact number of units expected to be sold by next week, but Billboard is reporting that a lack of high-powered new releases should secure a repeat top spot for Beyoncé’s latest.

The buzz around B and the album will probably only continue to grow, since she’s slated to debut a video for her next single, “Best Thing I Never Had,” very soon. But her album’s success comes as a bit of a surprise, seeing as “Run the World (Girls)” nor any other single has really resonated with fans or radio so far.

“Beyoncé, I love her, but none of her singles thus far off 4 seem poised to be doing huge numbers,” Perez Hilton told MTV News.

But we should not count B out in the singles department just yet, Us Weekly senior music editor Ian Drew said.

“You’ve got to remember that Beyoncé, being typical Beyoncé, her albums generally are anchored by really big hits; this album doesn’t have those hits yet,” Drew told MTV News. “It’s not to say that it won’t. There are some very strong songs on the album, but they have not been released yet. There are those songs on it, but they have not come out yet and they haven’t struck yet. Beyoncé is coming out at a time when radio is very crowded.”

Despite those obstacles, B is definitely marching to the beat of her own drummer. “She’s going in a different direction,” Drew said. “She’s taking control of her own career.”

Strong sales by female artists have put industry in positive territory for first time since 2004.

Beyoncé may have been on to something with that whole “Run the World (Girls),” business after all. Though Queen B’s single didn’t set the world on fire, in the first half of 2011, a number of her fellow divas — Adele, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry — have helped the music business achieve something it hasn’t been able to in nearly eight years: positive growth.

According to figures released on Wednesday by Nielsen SoundScan, overall album sales rose 3.6 percent to 221.5 million during the first half of this year. That marks the first time since 2004 that sales have been in the black for an industry that has suffered a decade-long slide thanks to rampant Internet piracy and slumping album sales as a result of fans cherry-picking singles on iTunes and other download services.

As we continue to hash out which songs will win this year’s Summer Jam crown, a number of the female contenders are among the artists who’ve helped turn the sales tide, including Perry, Nicki Minaj, Adele and Gaga. (Eminem hasn’t been a slouch either, thanks to his smash comeback Recovery, which recently passed the 1 million album download mark.)

Adele has already moved more than 2.5 million copies of her breakout hit 21 since February, along with 4.1 million single downloads of “Rolling in the Deep,” while Gaga’s Born This Way has shifted more than 1.5 million units. Perry has been doing her part as well, scoring a string of hit singles, including “E.T.,” which has sold more than 4.1 million digital units this year.

Britney Spears’ tourmate Minaj has the year’s ninth best-selling album so far with her debut, Pink Friday, with 1.4 million in sales to date, 556,000 of which have come in this calendar year.

Like Nicki, Rihanna has helped boost numbers this year with an album that came out in late 2010. Loud has sold more than 1.3 million copies to date, 598,000 of which came in 2011.

According to Billboard, the ladies aren’t alone, as British folk rock revivalists Mumford & Sons have been doing some heavy lifting too, selling 982,000 copies of their album Sigh No More so far this year. Country singer Jason Aldean’s My Kinda Party has also done its part, moving 763,000 units, as has Bruno Mars’ debut, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which has sold 686,000 copies.

It’s unclear at this point if the trend can sustain itself through the rest of the year. But with strong summer tour sales by Perry and rescheduled dates from Adele on the horizon, not to mention the promise of new albums from Lil Wayne, Kanye West and Jay-Z, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Willow Smith, Rick Ross, Coldplay, and “American Idol” winner Scotty McCreery, the industry may just be able to breathe a (small) sigh or relief for the first time in a long time.
